From a Need to an Entrepreneurial Empire

What does Zumba Fitness, shaving and baby products have in common? Inc. Magazine’s iCONICLA event in September featured motivational entrepreneurs’ stories of success that grew of need, desire and convenience. Michael Dubin took the mundane nuance of leaving home to go out to buy a new razor and turned it into an Internet success. The founder and CEO of the Dollar Shave Club started his business in 2011 and sold to Unilever in 2016 for a billion dollars. And yes, he is still working the business.

Everybody is doing Zumba…and it started with Alberto “Beto” Perez’s love of dancing. Alberto Aghion, COO, and Alberto Perlman, CEO, joined and the rest, as the saying goes, is history. The three Albertos have an International hit on their hands with Zumba classes taught in over 100 countries across 60,000 locations.

When Jessica Iclisoy became pregnant, she wanted only the healthiest and safest products for her child. The only problem was she couldn’t find any at the time. Not to settle for anything less than the best, she created her own products, whipping up baby shampoo in her kitchen in 1990. It wasn’t long after that she had the idea for a business. Her mother loaned her $2,000 in 1995 and California Baby was born. Flash forward to 2016, Ms. Iclisoy’s companies produces 90 organic products with revenues of $80 million. A self-made entrepreneurial woman on a mission.

Each of these entrepreneurs seized the opportunity, along with the risk, to solve everyday problems and needs they were experiencing and turned them into Internet empires. The road to success is not in the need, or even the opportunity, it is the action and drive to build something and solve a few problems along the way.
